Introduction
Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent groundcover which produces showy white flowers with threadlike petals. Its fermented roots and leaves were chewed by the Hotentot tribe of S. Africa. The plant contains mesembrine, though the pharmacology of kanna is not fully understood. The plant has been used by South African pastoralists and hunter-gatherers as a mood-altering substance from prehistoric times.

Use
Kanna has a number of different actions that may manifest depending on how it is used such as elevating the mood, lessening anxiety, providing a mild boost of energy and all the while relaxing the mind with a heightened sense of well-being. Kanna can be eaten, chewed, or made into tea. Kanna is a great mixing plant, however care should be taken as it's believed mechanism of action is of SSRI activity. This means do not take any MAOI containing herbs with Kanna such as Banisteriopsis caapi or Syrian rue, and you should speak to your doctor about any potential interactions with other medications, herbs or supplements you are taking if you decide to try this herb.
