Bacopa monnieri has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for centuries primarily as a mental tonic and also to reduce anxiety. Bacopa excels as a cerebral antioxidant, significantly toning down the sympathetic nervous system, causing a reduction of anxiety and over-excitement in the brain. Bacopa also strengthens cognition while stimulating neuronal growth when used on a regular basis. Bacopa produces an immediate tranquilizing and pacifying effect, and may be considered as the "Ayurvedic nootropic".

Bacopa monnieri is also known as the legendary Brahmi, a sacred Ayurvedic herb that promotes a thoughtful state of mind in addition to a powerful sense of inner peace. Brahmi is the foremost tonic in Ayurveda for the nervous system and general cognition.

Bacopa enhances serotonin synthesis by upregulating the expression of the tryptophan hydroxylase enzyme and by increasing the expression of the serotonin transporter. Bacopa has a protective effect on dopaminergic cells, preventing cell death caused by oxidative stress, and has an adaptogenic effect on neurotransmitter and corticosterone levels, preventing stress induced changes in serotonin and dopamine levels. Bacopa has a stimulating effect on the thyroid and increases the expression of its hormone T4. Bacopa has an analgesic effect in higher doses believed due to opioid, dopamine, and norepinephrine stimulation.

Bacopa also reduces oxidative stress caused by heavy metals and other toxins in the brain, protects against neural inflammation, prevents beta-amyloid buildup, and has neuronal dendritic growth stimulating properties. Bacopa increases cranial blood flow, mildly reduces blood pressure, and may work as a short term male anti-fertility agent that does not decrease testosterone levels.

Bacopa in small doses can greatly balance and enhance some herbs such as Muira puama and Ashwagandha.
