Black cohosh was used for a variety of medical reasons by Native Americans, and is modernly used for similar reasons, to support women's health, relax the body and mind, reduce pain, and fight inflammation. Black cohosh contains a compound called N-MethylSerotonin, which has activity as an SSRI, and an agonist of 5ht1a and 5ht7a receptor sites. Black cohosh also appears to activate opioid receptors, and when taken for an extended period of time, may upregulate the activity of the opioid system. These compounds and effects may in part explain Black cohosh's calming and pain relieving activity.
Black cohosh may cause liver stress in those with sensitive livers and if used for an extended period of time. While the science is debated, and some studies show no issues, it may be best to use this herb sparingly, and with the approval and knowledge of your health care provider. Do not use while pregnant or nursing.
