Corydalis yanhusuo is the leading herb used for pain relief in China is also a relative of the famous Papaver somniferum, aka Opium poppy. Corydalis is a very effective painkiller & sedative, stopping pain through multiple mechanisms related to the endorphin & dopamine systems. Corydalis yanhusuo is the most potent pain-killing member of the Papaver family besides the Somniferum species and has been traditionally used to help people quit opium. Corydalis contains many of the same relaxing & pain-killing compounds found in Papaver somniferum but is actually devoid of any true opiates. Instead, Corydalis contains these same active precursors that the somniferum variety uses, but produces its own set of unique alkaloids that show promise in reducing over-excitement of body & mind, helping people who suffer from insomnia as well as disorganized and paranoid thought disorders such as schizophrenia.
Chinese cat's claw is one of the finest of it's family, Rubiaceae, the hooked twigs of Uncaria rhynchophylla are collected to produce the herb known as Gou Teng, or Chinese Cat's claw. Chinese medicinal knowledge & Western studies with this herb reveal it has potent pain-killing, anti-inflammatory, sedative, anti-anxiety, nerve calming, neuro-protective, & circulation enhancing properties. Gou Teng is an effective COX-2 inhibitor, NMDA anatagonist, Dopamine D2 agonist, Calcium channel blocker, & Serotonin 5-HT1A agonist. Gou Teng has been shown in studies to help alleviate the physical symptoms of morphine withdrawal. Interestingly enough another herb used to stop morphine withdrawal, Mitragyna speciosa aka Mitragyna, was once classified in the same family as Uncaria rhynchophylla; 'Nauclea'.

A constituent of phellodendron, berberine, has a documented mood lifting effect activated by the elusive sigma-1 receptor.

Gastrodia supports the brain, the liver, can reduce pain, and overall has a healing tonic action on the body and mind, even supporting cognitive functions and preserving neurotransmitter levels. Gastrodia is commonly found mixed with Gou Teng (Chinese Cat's claw), the two herbs doubly reducing inflammation and over-excitation of the nerves and nervous system.
Schisandra berry is also known as the five flavor berry or Wu Wei Zi that functions as a tonic adaptogen with astringent qualities second to none. Cinchona bark is the original source of the anti-malarial drug 'quinine'. Native to South America and was traditionally used to reduce fever, remove parasites, and counter inflammation. Quinine and cinchona bark have been used by herbalists and healers to effectively reduce leg cramps and spasms, although the FDA claims there is zero evidence that quinine works for such purposes and has sub-sequentially taken remedies containing the compound off of the market.
Chinese coptis is an herb related to corydalis & the poppy families, containing the compound berberine & other similarly structured isoquinoline compounds. Coptis has mild analgesic effects & is beneficial for nearly the entire body, especially the stomach, intestines, & bowels.
