Also known as
Red Ayahuasca, Yagè, Caapi
Banisteriopsis caapi and related species have a long history of use as medicines and "plant teachers" among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon Rainforest. The name Ayahuasca literally means "Vine of the Soul".
Harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine, all of which are both beta-carboline harmala alkaloids with MAOI type properties. Banisteriopsis muricata is also rich in antioxidants, proanthocyanidins, epicatechin and procyanidin B2.
Banisteriopsis spp. are regarded as a protective and nurturing teacher plant according to Amazonian natives. They have been traditionally used in South American medicine as spiritual sacraments and as purgatives, effectively cleansing the body of parasites and toxins. Banisteriopsis spp. are used ceremonially for healing by two religious groups, the Santo Daime and the Brazilian church União do Vegetal.
Ayahuasca is one of the most profound herbal agents available in the realm of mental and emotional healing. Outside of its indigenous use, modern research has also begun demonstrating these impressive properties. For example, a study from 2017, published in Scientific Reports journal, focused on the effects of caapi alkaloids harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, demonstrating an increase in adult neurogenesis in vitro. Moreover, the research concluded that, as the effects of caapi alkaloids stimulate neuroplasticity, this may be one of the reasons for ayahuasca's anti-depressive effects. In another study, harmine has been found to stimulate proliferation of human neural progenitors in vitro.
Banisteriopsis muricata contains MAO inhibiting compounds. If consumed, these compounds pose a very serious risk if taken with or within close proximity to many different herbs, drugs, & supplements. Please heavily research and be very cautious with this herb.
