Cardamom is the name of an aromatic seed & pod harvested from the plant Elettaria cardamomum, a native of India in the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related to both the famous medicinal spices ginger & turmeric. Cardamom is the most valuable spice by weight, only competing with Vanilla & Saffron.

Pods or seeds
1/2 teaspoon or 4-8 pods is suitable per batch of tea. The pods store better than the seeds, which if not kept in the proper conditions lose much of their oil content over time. Both can be brewed into tea effectively although the seeds are stronger & possess a slightly different oil content than the pods.
Cardamom is most commonly used as an exotic spice, an ingredient in masala chai teas, or as a digestive aid, chewed with fennel after a meal to enhance digestion or to ward off an upset stomach. It has an impressive array of aromatics present in its essential oil and can be used in a multitude of spice & herb blends, either as a medicinal for its aromatic flavor. Cardamom is extremely effective at stopping stomach pains, even those that are drug induced or experienced during pregnancy. Cardamom is also a well known remedy for low sexual response & impotence.
