Also known as
Periploca of the woods, Gymnema, Gymnema sylvestre
Gymnema sylvestre is an herb native to the tropical forests of India and Sri Lanka, and is an extremely powerful herb, especially in this day and age. Gymnema works through a compound named gymnemic acid, which binds to and blocks the bodies ability to taste and utilize sugar via its uptake. This can reduce cravings as well as prevent many of the side effects of sugar consumption.
Gymnema can be brewed into tea, made into a tincture, or encapsulated. Recommended dosage is 1-2 teaspoons per serving.
Gymnema is a very peculiar plant, unlike much of the offerings of the botanical world in that it serves a very specific purpose, a trait shared by some herbs, these plants often becoming utilized by society in very profound ways. Gymnema shows much promise, however its properties are relatively unknown to most, and with so much for the sugar industry to lose, is it any wonder?
