Introduction
Cobalamin is a vitamin belonging to the B complex family. It is an essential vitamin, and cannot be synthesized by the body, but is commonly derived from food, where it is found in primarily in red meats, shellfish, or bacteria and yeasts. Deficiencies are more common with vitamin B12 than the other B vitamins, which can lead to a gradual deterioration of one's health. To prevent such issues, cereal grains are often reinforced with additional Cobalamin, while the vitamin is also commonly taken as a dietary supplement.

Cobalamin is responsible for energy metabolism and is responsible for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system via the synthesis of myelin and the formation of red blood cells. Like most of the other B vitamins, Cobalamin is heavily linked to DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism.
