Vitamin D is an essential vitamin which is derived through sunlight, animal based foods, and supplementation. Cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3, is the form that is created in our skin upon exposure to sunlight, and is considered to be the most effective and bioavailable version of this ubiquitous vitamin. Recommended amount per dose is 5-20 mg per day for normal supplementation. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Do not consume without an accurate mg scale.
Vitamin D plays many important roles in the human body, and deficiency may be more common than realized due to the unique nature of this vitamin, which outside of supplementation, is only derived only through exposure to sunlight, or the consumption of meats and milk. Those that are most at risk of vitamin D deficiency are those who live in areas with little sunlight, those who work night shifts, those who spend most of their time indoors, and those that do not consume animal products. For these individuals, vitamin D supplementation is highly recommended.
