Also known as
Kapikachhu, Velvet bean, Cowitch
Mucuna pruriens is a leguminous vine that has naturalized itself throughout the entire world thanks to its near indestructible sea-faring beans. Besides being used as jewelry, these beans also act as a powerful physical & mental tonic which have gained respect as a medicinal food-herb in not only the Ayurvedic system of medicine but also in South American Shamanic rituals & other herbal based healing systems. Mucuna pruriens contains a wide variety of nutrients & neurotransmitters, strengthening the body & mind while tonifying the adrenal & endorphin systems. Mucuna contains a high concentration of the compound 'L-Dopa' which is a direct precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine.
Mucuna contains a high amount of L-Dopa (some samples showing over 8%), serotonin (5-HT), 5-HTP, nicotine, beta-carboline, and tryptamine alkaloids.
Whole bean, nibs, or powder
White, Brown, and Black beans
We currently carry three different varieties of Mucuna: White, Brown, and Black beans, available in whole bean, powder, and nib form. The mucuna nibs and powder we carry has been traditionally prepared via Ayurvedic principles, and are given the names 'Vanilla', 'Cocoa', & 'Coffee', testament to the taste, aroma, and effects that each bean carries with it.
Recommended dosage is ½-1 teaspoon on an empty stomach taken first thing in the morning, waiting 30 minutes before eating. Quality green tea is a potent synergist when paired with mucuna and strongly increases the stimulatory effects. In our studies with mucuna we have found it most effective and to produce the least side effects when taken in cycles, or on an as needed basis.
The whole bean is very difficult to powder. If you do not have access to strong grinding equipment it is recommended to order the powder.
The nibs can be made into tea but must be boiled for 5-10 minutes to fully extract.
Mucuna strengthens core energy and combines excellently with Green tea, Sida cordifolia, Cocoa, Guarana, Carob, Kola nut, Rhodiola rosea, Yohimbe, Ashwagandha, Muira puama, Catuaba & many others.
Mucuna is one of the best foods available for the fortification of the entire body & mind and excels as an aphrodisiac and muscle builder which combines optimally with stimulating herbs and activities, replenishing neurotransmitters involved in mood, sexuality, focus, and feelings of well being. It is also possibly the best natural tool available for the promotion of human growth hormone levels, which has potent anti-aging and fat-burning effects.
Mucuna pruriens is a powerful plant demonstrating its strength in many ways, such as its ability to produce seeds that can float through ocean waters unharmed, sprouting on the shores where they land. Mucuna has introduced itself throughout most of the planet through these means and can be found all over the world. Because of the strength of the bean, we recommend the pre-powdered beans. Breaking open the initial bean is very important, whole beans do not make good tea.
Mucuna has a potent stimulant action and should not be mixed with other potent stimulants, even high levels of caffeine. Do not exceed the recommended dosage and do not use on a daily basis. It is recommended to cycle this and all mucuna based formulations as to not exceed more time on the herb than off. Discontinue use if any anxiety or other side effects occur.
