Introduction
Vitex agnus-castus, the fruit of which is commonly known as the Monk pepper has a rich history of use as an anaphrodisiac, said "to cool the heat of lust" & is believed to have been used as an anti-libido medicine by monks to aid their attempts to remain chaste. There are reports of Vitex having an aphrodisiac action as well, this effect occurs at higher dosage levels.

Constituents
Flavonoids, alkaloids, diterpenoids, vitexin, casticin and steroidal hormone precursors. It is believed that some of these compounds work on the pituitary gland which would explain its effects on hormonal levels. Studies have shown that Monk pepper can bind to opiate receptors; explaining the analgesic action & its use for alleviating menstrual pains.

Use
Vitex berry can be consumed straight, the powder made into a tea, or smoked for an analgesic effect. Recommended dosage 2-6 grams, lower dosages better for anaphrodisiac action, higher doses better for analgesic & aphrodisiac action.
