General information
Berberis vulgaris is a small shrub of the Berberidaceae family and the Ranunculale order, which is also home to a number of medicinal plants such as Corydalis yanhusuo and Papaver sonniferum. Berberis vulgaris, like a few other well known medicinal plants contains the alkaloid berberine, a compound linked to improving gut health, reducing inflammation, improving mood, and enhancement of breathing.

The berries are somewhat low in berberine comparatively speaking, but do contain an incredible amount of vitamin c and and citric acid, as well as polyphenols and other vitamins. The combination of low dose therapeutic alkaloids with antioxidant polyphenols and vitamins make this berry the number one superfood choice for optimizing your fruit intake.
