DHEA is the most abundant naturally occurring hormone found within humans. It is produced in the adrenal glands, the gonads, and the brain, and is utilized as a a precursor to both testosterone and estrogen, depending on the sex of the user as well as the body's needs. DHEA also has a number of biological effects, acting an anabolic, a neurosteroid, and neurotrophin; supporting healthy body and brain development, growth, and survivability.
DHEA, like pregnenolone and progesterone, belong to the group of neurosteroids that are found in high concentrations in certain areas of the brain. Neurosteroids affect synaptic functioning, are neuroprotective, and enhance myelinization.
